What is Elimination Communication (EC)?

Elimination Communication (EC) is the gentle practice of attending to an infant or young child's toileting needs without the use of diapers. Diapers can be used as a backup, but not as the main means of "catching" the elimination.

EC sounds rather new-fangled, but has actually been practised for many generations in the past. It is still being practised in many primitive cultures around the world, and is catching on in many developed countries such as the US, UK and Australia.

In general, caregivers either keep baby bottom-bare, cloth diapered, or in training pants so that they can see immediately when baby goes. They learn to read and recognise baby's signals over time, and bring baby to a suitable receptacle for baby to eliminate.
